Alcatel-Lucent – PMO self paced training
Alcatel-Lucent was engaged by Telstra to deliver the multi-billion dollar Titan Program. The Alcatel-Lucent Titan Program Office Manager, Nick Haywood, engaged Core Consulting Group to train his PMO staff following a recommendation from a Senior Telstra Manager. Nick’s vision is that PMO staff would be both up skilled in their current role and would also be able to multi skill, taking on different PMO roles. Existing on line Project Management training material was not considered appropriate as it lacked the depth needed for PMO specialist roles such as the Scheduling team, the Risk team and Cost team.
Through a partnership with Alcatel-Lucent Open University, who were jointly funding the initiative, the training courses were required to be delivered in a reusable, on line format. Drawing on previous experience, Core Consulting Group was asked to provide training in a number of modules including Planning & Scheduling, Updating & Reporting, Issues & Risk, Estimating and Cost Management. The on line modules were designed for self paced training, supplemented by short face to face Question & Answer sessions. They included theory, case studies, worked solutions, quizzes and exercises.
During the initial days in preparing for deliver, it was realised an additional preliminary piece was required in defining standards for scheduling, estimating and cost management. These standards were developed by Core Consulting Group in collaboration with the Titan PMO and the Alcatel-Lucent Australia Pacific PMO. Once standards were agreed the training content was put together and deployed over several months. Part of the delivery included PMO staff undertaking the training courses.
Alcatel-Lucent has been left with re-useable, high quality training content. The PMO staff feedback was good with awareness in areas such as Scheduling improving across the PMO.
